Science Fiction Book about Space Trader?

book i read a while ago about a guy/alien who is drifting in space and finds a abandoned spaceship with a DNA bank on it .. takes off and sells cloned animals/aliens to different planets but usually with a twist ie sells em a animal then they need to buy special food etc...thought might be Poul Anderson Trader to Stars but no however the main guys name is something short like Zak or something
