Mossberg maverick model 88 ?

I just purchased a mossberg maverick model 88. This is a 12g shoutgun and on the barrel it says modified choke. I intend on going deer hunting with this gun and need to know if I can use slugs in this barrel. The inside of this barrel is smooth and there is no grooves on the end of the barrel to put other chokes in it.
